The Gimhae Western Cultural Center, designed by Chang Myung Architects of Chang Myung Group, won the grand prize at the 19th Gimhae Architecture Awards in 2018. The Gimhae Architecture Awards Festival is an annual architectural event held to improve the urban landscape of Gimhae by encouraging the construction of beautiful buildings and presenting the future of Gimhae architecture. A total of 20 buildings were subject to screening, and the screening was conducted based on various standards such as topographic utilization, creativity in outdoor space planning, formability of buildings, and efficient relocation.
The Gimhae Western Cultural Center, which won the grand prize, was completed in 2016 and was built with the design of Chang Myung Architects, selected through a design contest. At the time of the design election, Chang Myung’s work was evaluated as a space plan that could be converted into a multi-purpose mode, along with a reputation for being a design with excellent originality and artistry. The Gimhae Western Cultural Center was evaluated to improve the quality of community facilities by forming internal and external spaces at the 19th Gimhae Architecture Awards. In particular, it won the grand prize, receiving reviews that the exterior of the building, in harmony with the surrounding landscape, will become a local landmark in the future.
The Gimhae Western Cultural Center was called the Yulha Complex Cultural Center at the time of the design contest. Still, the official name was confirmed as the Gimhae Western Cultural Center in 2018. The Gimhae Western Cultural Center is located in Yulha-dong, Gimhae-si, and is a building consisting of one basement floor and four floors above ground with a size of 18,000㎡.
