Since the advent of sustainable development in the 1980s, many developed countries have begun implementing energy-saving building systems. The green building concept was introduced in the UK in 1990 and is now widely used in architecture, real estate, and construction. To welcome the new year of 2024, in this trend report, I'd like to look at the green building trends of 2024 following the previous trend report about green building.

Green Building Trends 2024

1. Net-Zero Buildings

Net Zero Buildings refer to a building that is self-sufficient in energy by producing as much energy as possible in the building's energy system. Energy can be created by applying sunlight, solar heat, geothermal heat, etc., to energy systems. Net Zero Buildings' most prominent feature, and why it is currently in the spotlight, is the environmental advantage of reducing carbon emissions by producing eco-friendly energy. In addition to ecological benefits, there is an economic advantage in that the cost of operating a building is less than that of traditional buildings, thanks to energy efficiency. It is also significant in that it improves the health of building users living in eco-friendly buildings and raises social awareness of the environment in the community.

2. Sustainable Materials

Another trend in green buildings is using renewable or recycled materials for buildings. Examples of sustainable construction materials include bamboo, wool, and cork. Compared to traditional materials, these sustainable materials are drawing attention for their significantly lower environmental side effects, more minor carbon emissions, and no indoor air pollution caused by toxic chemicals from traditional materials.

3. Passive Design

Active design and passive design are two main categories of eco-friendly architectural design. Active design refers to efficiently designing a building's energy system to reduce energy use or using renewable energy systems such as solar panels. Suppose active design is intended to use eco-friendly energy sources and use energy efficiently actively. In that case, passive design is a concept that aims to minimize the energy consumption of the building by making the most of nature's energy sources. Accordingly, it is a building design that reduces the use of cooling and heating through natural lighting and ventilation through effective architectural forms and structures and focuses on minimizing energy consumption by relocating spaces or discarding unnecessary space.

4. Green Roofs

Green roofs are roofs or rooftops covered with vegetation. The green roof has the advantage that it can be applied not only to new buildings but also to old buildings. The green roof helps reduce energy use in buildings by lowering the air temperature and cooling the city's heat, consequently contributing to reducing carbon emissions. The advantage of lowering sewage overflow is another pro of green roofs by absorbing rainwater during rainfall. In addition, since the roof of the building is covered with plants, UV rays are blocked, which increases the lifespan of the building roof. In addition, the green roof contributes to preserving biodiversity by functioning as a habitat for local birds and other wildlife creatures.
